On the Agenda: Cricket, anyone?

Heritage Park may get a new multi-purpose athletic field if the Canton Board of Trustees approves the project on Tuesday night.

The plan is to create a regulation-sized field to accommodate football, lacrosse, soccer and cricket.

Ann Conklin, director of leisure services, told me on Friday that cricket fans especially have been asking for a place to play. Right now, they use the outfields at the Canton Sports Center.

One thinks the need must be great, when the Michigan Cricket Association has agreed to pay $6,502 to build a concrete pitch in order to help keep the township’s costs down. The contribution doesn’t give the association any priority or exclusive rights to use the field, though. Leisure Services will handle the scheduling.

The township would spend $26,204.32 to build the park on the west end of the park, over soccer field #8 and some adjoining open space.

There are more details available for download as part of the trustee meeting agenda packet, which can be found here. The meeting starts at 7 p.m. at the township administration building.

We’ll have a complete story for next Thursday’s Eagle.

On the Agenda: NOT Best Buy

Don’t get the wrong idea if you happen to glance at the July 16 meeting agenda for the Canton Planning Commission.

Yes, it includes the Best Buy project, but only as an item for staff referral. That’s a formality in which the commissioners vote to allow township planning staff to review project plans with a developer.

So, no one will actually be talking about the project on Monday. The site plans are available for anyone to review at the township, though.

What will the commission be talking about? A cell phone tower and site plan revisions for a National City bank near Warren and Canton Center.

As always, the agenda is available for download here.

Price drop

The print version of the story about the new car for Tom Yack didn’t mention that he got the “basic” version of the 2007 Ford Edge, which was $1,775 cheaper than the original quote from the purchasing co-operative for an upgraded model.

And in case you’re wondering, the items Yack will do without when the car arrives in six to eight weeks, according to materials handed out at the meeting, are: “auto lights, auto rearview mirror dimmer, illuminated door entry, fog lights, in-dash CD player, wheel controls for radio, compass and some other smaller items.”

Keep options open when roads close

Michigan’s trying to make it a bit easier to let us know where road work is going to be with MI Drive.

Some of you know by now that the exit from I-275 to Michigan Avenue is closed through mid-August. But if you didn’t, then you could search for closures by on that route on MI Drive.

Combine that with the fantastic new route adjustment feature on Google maps and last-minute travel plans become a snap!

New Web site for Canton police, fire departments

Canton launched a new Web site for its public safety department last week.

The department says the easier-to-use format will allow for some beefed-up offerings, including crime maps, videos and other frequently updated content.
