What are you doing tonight?

You could head over to Plymouth Township Hall, where the League of Women Voters of Northwest Wayne County will sponsor a candidate forum for the May 8 Plymouth-Canton School Board Election. The 90-minute forum starts at 7 p.m. It’ll be shown on cable for residents in the district.

Opting for a movie instead? The Last Mimzy is opening tonight. This week in the paper, Jeff Novak reviews the family-friendly flick made by a couple of Michigan natives.

Or, you could head to the Village Theater to get your art fix. An exhibition of work by Tanya Au is on display through the end of the month. Hours are Mon – Fri: 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. / Fri & Sat: – 7-9 p.m. / Sunday: 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.

Au told me recently she draws on childhood memories often in her work. Much of her art is about trying to connect with one’s heritage. She gave up on a graphics career (“The rush rush rush did not really appeal to me,” she said.) and started painting art for art’s sake in the mid-80’s. She now teaches art and is delving more and more into abstract painting. The watercolor pieces on display at the theater are from throughout her career.

“When something jars you in a certain way, hits you emotionally, you can ignore it or you can go after it,” she said.
