On the Agenda: New car for Yack

A few more details to add to the story this week about Supervisor Tom Yack’s car accident:

  • The township is self-insured for its vehicles, meaning it foregoes private insurance and simply pays the cost of damages or replacement in the event of a crash.
  • The GMC Envoy was purchased for $27,843. It had been due for about $3,600 in “routine repairs” in 2008.
  • Yack will ask the board Tuesday to buy a 2007 Ford Edge through the Macomb County purchasing cooperative for $25,500.

The township released its proposed agenda and background material for Tuesday’s meeting and it includes this summary of the item:

The Supervisor’s 2003 GMC Envoy (65,000 miles) was recently involved in an accident. Ed Olson, fleet manager evaluated the vehicle and declared it a total loss (except for tires).
Fleet maintenance anticipated $3,600 in routine repairs for the Envoy in 2008. A Ford Edge (crossover vehicle) was selected as the replacement vehicle (low center of gravity with ample room
for four adults). The vehicle would be purchased through the Macomb County purchasing cooperative. The three purchasing cooperatives that we use do not take orders after the middle of
July. As a result, if the vehicle is going to be replaced it must be done so at the Board’s July 10th meeting. The cost of the new vehicle would be approximately $25,500. The 2003 GMC Envoy’s cost was $27,843. It would be expected that the new vehicle would provide many years of service. By way of comparison the basic 2007 police Crown Victoria currently costs $20,762 (Ed indicates that the 2008 will see a significant increase in cost).

Other items on the relatively short agenda include: a resolution to approve a $50 million bond sale for sewer infrastructure projects and improvements to Fellows Creek Golf Course; creating a new job for “Head Inspector” in the building department; and site plans for a Rite Aid near Cherry Hill Village.
