Group to present concert to help support theatre programs
A fundraiser this weekend will combine popular songs with a bit of history.
The Wayne Actors Community Theater (ACT) and the fundraising arm, Stage Door, are presenting a Night of Andrew Lloyd Webber fundraiser to generate money for their programs, according to Colleen Meyer, arts and entertainment supervisor for the City of Wayne.
The show highlights songs from each of Webber’s musicals, she said.
“We’ll have at least one song from every show,” she said. “There will be some songs from his lesser known works, too.”
The show takes place from tomorrow through Sunday, with performances at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and at 2 p.m. on Sunday at the State Wayne Theater, which is on Michigan Avenue just west of Wayne Road.
The format of the show will provide a sort of timeline for Webber’s work, from his early musicals to his later ones. Meyer said each will feature a short introduction that will help the audience better understand the music.
“We do a short talk before each number to give the people some background about the music,” she said.
Tickets are $14 for adults, $12 for senior citizens and $8 for children 12 years old or younger. All proceeds go to benefit the Wayne theater programs. They are on sale at the Wayne Community Center on Howe and Annapolis roads and at the theater box office.
“Hopefully, we can get the new budget year off to a good start,” Meyer said.
The show should be a good for older and younger attendees alike, she said, because the cast of 30-40 singers are made up of singers as young as 7 years old.
“We’ve got a nice cast,” she said. “We’ve kids and we’ve got adults. It should be a nice family environment.”
