Committee fine-tunes mural concept

By the end of the month, the side of the State Wayne Theater could look a lot different.

The mural project destined for the side of the city landmark will begin around May 21, according to Peter McInerney, community development director for the City of Wayne.

Muralists Josh Winer and David Fichter are scheduled to arrive in town then to begin the work. Before they can do that, though, the city has to sign off on the final design, he said.

“It’s kind of like proofreading at this point,” McInerney said. “We just want to make sure everyone looks like who they’re supposed to look like and make sure there are not any errors in it.”

Originally designed to be placed along Michigan Avenue or Wayne Road, the mural will be painted on the side of the theater at the suggestion of the artists, who identified it as the ‘best canvas in town’ during a visit to the city last year.

The mural will depict the history of Wayne, with prominent people displayed as well as images that highlight the prominence of transportation as it factored into the evolution of the community. A winding Rouge River will serve as a backdrop. The installation of the mural will take about two months.

I don’t care if they never bring back fireworks. After the goings on last year I say good bye and good riddance. If you don’t think it was that bad talk to the police, their lives are put at risk enough without things that can’t be controlled. This risk can be controlled by eliminating it.

As I have said before…The mural WILL NOT bring business to the City of Wayne! And, to correct your statement…I have ALWAYS supported our police department. I totally know the risks that our police officers face every day and I sincerely appreciate the work that they do. The fireworks have always meant something special to our community. It’s very sad that some people have spoiled it for everyone else. I live very close to the Community Center and know first-hand of the inconvenience of parking congestion on the streets. The police and fire departments have ALWAYS done a GREAT job during the fireworks. I have nothing but complete and total respect for those who protect us every day. I always keep them in my thoughts and prayers. You are entitled to your opinion, as so am I. That’s the great thing about our country.

I agree the money spent on the mural would be better spent someplace else. However I don’t think the fireworks are it. If only it was just a matter of traffic congestion or parking inconvenience. The crowd the last couple of years has really made going to Attwood Park to enjoy the fireworks undesirable. What's happened to common courtesy and parents watching their children?
