That’s the message behind a program started up more than 11 years ago in the City of Wayne. The Wayne Public Library and the Wayne Civitans team up every year to recognize children that help out in the community or do something special for their neighbors with the Good Kids, Good Citizens, Good Community program.
More than 100 people showed up for the awards ceremony on May 2, according to Library Director Paulette Medvecky, also president of the Civitans.
“It’s nice because it’s not always for the kids that excel in academics,” she said.
The program recognizes youngsters in the community who have served as positive role models or who have made a significant contribution to our community. Nominations are made by teachers, police officers, neighbors, principals, community officials, and people living in Wayne.
This year, 14 youngsters were honored, some for helping their neighbors. One returned a lost Ipod and another turned in a large amount of money found at school—without taking any.
“They’re the kind of things that need to be recognized, as well,” Medvecky said.
The 14 honorees are: Adam Gorring, Zachary Smith, Kevin Scott, Kevin O’Brien, Hayden Derr, Bridgette Kay Tressler, Delani Derr, Rediana Afesllari, Kira Leach, Meah Long, Brianna Minor, Zachary Patson, and Tyler Schmittou.
Each recipient received a certificate, a photo album remembrance, and selected a book that was donated to the library in his or her honor.
