Sidewalk sales return this week
The streets in the downtown area may be under construction, but the sidewalks will be hopping this weekend.
The annual sidewalk sales events return to the downtown area this week, beginning with a business exposition tonight at Goudy Park.
“We’ve received a good response so far,” said Jill Gaudet, marketing specialist for the chamber of commerce. “We had a good turnout last year.”
The expo takes place in conjunction with the free concert series at Goudy Park.
The sidewalk sales take place on Friday and Saturday at businesses along Wayne Road and Michigan Avenue. It’s a little difficult to navigate right now, but the project should move to a new phase by then.
“We’re hoping they have everything moved to the other side,” Gaudet said.
The Michigan Avenue reconstruction project is set to move from the north side of the road to the south side of the westbound lanes either this week or next.
Businesses throughout the downtown district will feature special sales on outdoor items. Another popular attraction is the 25-cent hot dogs available at Northside Hardware throughout the event.
Kim Loveless, who owns the Acorn Shop on Wayne Road, said the sidewalk sale was a success for her last year.
“I’ll definitely have some things out,” she said. “I’m going through the store right now to see what I’ll put out there.
“I just got back from Chicago,” she added. “I need to make room for all the new stuff I bought.”
The sidewalk sale also coincides with the annual flea market and craft sale at the Wayne Senior Activity Center. That event, a fundraiser for the center, takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.
