War Machine aids Beat the Bulldozer theater plan

Don’t be alarmed—the War Machine scheduled to make an appearance at the Historic Wayne Theater on Saturday means no harm.

War Machine is the headliner at the Beat the Bulldozer concert series at the theater, according to Don Nicholson, capital fundraiser chairman of the theater. Any fans of the rock icons KISS will be impressed, he said.

“They’re one of the top KISS tribute bands in the country,” said Nicholson. “They’ll be there in full make-up. It should be a great show.”

Nicholson and other volunteers have hosted a concert series at the theater on Michigan Avenue every Saturday throughout the summer. The goal of the series is to generate awareness about the plight of the theater, which has been cited under the dangerous and blighted building ordinance by the City of Wayne. Nicholson and the theater volunteers face a September deadline to generate funding to bring the 80-year-old venue up to code.

The opening band, Second Wind, has a bit of history regionally, too. Nicholson said they date back to the 1970s, when they were known as Nobody’s Children.

The concerts start at 6 p.m. on the lawn of the theater, which is between Wayne Road and Elizabeth Street in downtown Wayne. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for senior citizens and students.
Nicholson said he his also seeking out corporate sponsors and grants to help make the Sept. 19 deadline.

“We can do this, but we need support from the community,” he said.

Brenda Ozog:

It was a really great show. And what’s funny is seeing people there who banned their kids from listening to KISS back in the 70’s and 80’s listening to the music.
