Boundless playground receives major boost
If all goes according to plan, A Play 4 All Playground planned for Soroptimst Park could get a major boost.
Representatives from the CVS Drug Store chain indicated they would partner with the city to construct the handicapped-accessible playground, providing the city sign an agreement with Go Play! ensuring that it will be constructed to their standards.
The City of Wayne entered into the first part of the agreement Tuesday night. A $795 expenditure, coupled with $1,000 from CVS, could bring a grant worth between $30,000 and $40,000 to the project. The money would come from the All Kids Can Charitable Trust Fund.
“This is good news for us,” said Kim Alexander, Wayne Parks and Recreation director. “We’re really, really excited about it.”
The parks and recreation department proposed the playground last year. Since then they’ve put on a number of fundraisers–including the on-going Pop 4 Play, where residents can donated returnable cans and plastic bottles–and generated more than $25,000 toward the project.
Alexander said they’ve also applied for grants from the Southeast Michigan Community Foundation, the Michigan Trust Fund, Wayne County and more.
“We hope to hear about four more grants in the fall,” she said.
