Sgt. Alan Maciag said he’s looking forward to his new role in the Wayne Police Department, even if it means less driving time in one of the department new squad cars. It’s easy to look up to the newest sergeant in the Wayne Police Department.
Towering above 6 feet tall, Alan Maciag was promoted recently, fulfilling a long-time dream.
“I’ve always had an interest in it,” he said of police work.
Maciag has worked in the Wayne Police Department for more than nine years and has served in virtually every capacity. He’s an evidence technician and a field training officer and a driving instructor. He most enjoyed, however, his five years with the Community Oriented Police Crime Reduction Unit (COPCRU).
“It was probably the best time I’ve had here,” he said. “I got to work a variety of cases. It helped me out a lot.”
Maciag has a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and is currently working on a master’s degree in criminology. He said his experience on the job will help him in his new role, but so will his education.
“You look at a lot of different topics,” he said. “You have to think outside the box. It gives you a broad perspective of the job. That has helped out, too.”
Maciag’s position will evolve to take on a more supervisory role, he said. He’ll be a road supervisor and monitor the activity of other officers, sign off on report and take care of prisoners. The position still will give him an opportunity to get away from the desk, though.
“You can do the same things you can as a patrol officer,” he said. “You’re still in the mix. If something happens you’re in charge at the scene unless someone there outranks you.”
The Wayne department is the only one he’s worked in, but he said he doesn’t see that changing.
“I love it here,” he said. “Every day is a learning experience. It’s a great department, with great guys to work with.”
