Wayne business owner robbed, assaulted

Kimberly Loveless, a life-long Wayne resident, opened The Acorn Shop in 2005 with her husband, Brad.

The owner of a popular Wayne store is recovering after she was assaulted during a robbery Tuesday night.

Kimberly Loveless, who owns the Acorn Shop on Wayne Road, is resting in an area hospital. She could be released later this week.

“She’s going to be okay, but she’s pretty shaken up,” said. Lt. Jason Wright of the Wayne Police Department.

The incident took place at about 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, he said. She had been about to lock up the store when an African American man about six foot tall forced his way through the door, according to Wright. He wore a black hooded sweatshirt and had a black scarf covering his face.

“He forced her back into the store,” Wright said.

The suspect stabbed the victim several times, according to Wright, grabbed her purse and then fled on foot. He didn’t take anything else from the store.

Loveless was able to call 911, he said. She was transported to Oakwood Annapolis Hospital and later to the University of Michigan Hospital.

Wright said police called in an on-duty K-9 officer to aid in the search for the suspect.

“The K-9 search did not provide any new information,” he said.

Loveless opened the store in September of 2005. A life-long Wayne resident, she is active in the community as a member of the Wayne 2020 Committee and the Wayne Festival Commission. She is a regular donor to a variety of charitable events and other fundraisers, too.

Police are following up on some leads, but are also seeking help from the community, according to Wright.

“We want to encourage anyone with any knowledge of this crime to come forward,” he said. “If they want to be anonymous, we’ll respect that.”

Anyone with information should call the Wayne police at (734) 721-1414. There is also a reward being offered through Crimestoppers. Tipsters can call 1 (800) SPEAK-UP to provide information that way.

Wayne is turning Getto, I am so glad she is going to be ok, I hope she doesn’t leave Wayne. Her store is adorable. I wish her best wishes, and to the guy who robbed her, get a job dirtbag, do you think you can handle stabbing a defenseless woman. Aren’t you the big man. Your mother would be so proud. And to the owner of the store, honey you should get a ccw permit for the next time you run into the little girl.

Westland Resident, who visited shop:

I’m so sorry to hear about Kimberly Loveless, she was a very nice person. She would have given the purse with out violence. The police should ask anyone at the local Narcotics Anonomys (Alanon) which is at the corner of Wayne & glennwood if they saw a man with a scarf and hooded sweat shirt. I’m sure they come to the meeting for free food/beverages. The sniffing dog should have went there after the incident. If I were a cop, that is where I would start, then Norwayne area (salvation army, etc…) the person obviously needed money and has probably done this before. That much anger-it had to be drug-use. Hope Kimberly makes a full recovery.

Will Continue to Live in Wayne:

The city is turning “ghetto” (yes, that’s how it is spelled)? Such an ignorant statement. Because someone decides to viciously attack an innocent businesswoman, the city is faulted. Do we know where this attacker came from? Maybe the bus station down the street? Even if he is a resident of Wayne, does one bad apple spoil the whole city? I am a great fan of Kim Loveless. I have shopped in her store many times and have enjoyed her conversation (of which there is always alot)! Kim is an asset to this city and I doubt this will change her perspective. Yes, it was a terrible attack. Yes, it happened to an awesome individual. Kim will continue to be in my prayers for a speedy physical and emotional recovery. Maybe your energies would be better directed by contacting the city to provide surveillance cameras and better lighting in the area instead of degrading the whole city over this one incident.

I wish the very best for a speedy recovery for the owner of The Acorn Shop. I have purchased items in the past, and found her to be a very pleasant person to do business with. The person who committed such a violent act against her needs to be “horse-whipped” at the very least! That common street thug will hopefully be caught and convicted for this hainous crime! I do believe that in the end, that criminal WILL have to answer for his actions to a much higher authority and his final judgement will be rendered. The most important thing we as a community can do for now, is to keep Mrs. Loveless and her family in our thoughts and prayers. And, pray that the punk that did this to her will be caught, convicted, and be taken off of our streets so that he can never do anything like this to someone else. Please say a prayer for Kim Loveless.
There is no doubt in my mind that the hardworking men and women of our Police Department WILL catch this person.

Kim,

I am so sorry to hear what happened in your store. You are the nicest person! I am praying for your speedy recovery. Your store, the Acorn shop is one of the nicest little shops around! I hope that your shop can be opened again when you are feeling better. This is such a tragedy. I have lived in Wayne for 22 years, and hope that our commmunity doesn’t experience more of this violence.

My thoughts and prayers go out to you!

Love, Sandy

Concerned Resident:

I must agree with “will continue to live in wayne”, how are people going to sit here and complain about how “gHetto” Wayne is…if you find it so bad then get out and do something about it! Because one thing happened does not mean the city is falling apart, Kimberly is strong and will pull through. So many people have been praying for her and showing their concern, and that shows how wayne is now a bad place, because people are pulling together to help.
There is no need to talk arrogantly of Wayne.
We all love you Kimberly, you’re in everyones prayers.

There will be a benefit at the Wayne Community Center Wednesday, December 19th from 12-8. You can give donations and purchase items from The Acorn Shop,

Yes, Wayne does rock! My husband and I attended the benefit for Kim. It was sensational! I was so impressed with the love and support of our community towards Kim. I am proud to live in Wayne, and what a great honor it is to know Kim from shopping in her store. Our community will not let this incident destroy our community. It just means that all of us as citizens need to come together and find a solution such as better lighting, cameras, neighborhood watches etc. I wish we could have front street parking (in front of the stores on Wayne rd). I understand there is an issue because Wayne rd. is a county rd.

I will continue to live in Wayne. I am even more convinced of how great our community is after attending Kim’s benefit. It shows how strong we are as a community. I also have the best neighbors on Thinbark Street!
