Decision 2006

Abbo, Corriveau head to November election

A longstanding public official and a lawyer on his second attempt at elected office will face off in November for the 20th District State House of Representatives seat.

Two Northville residents made it out of a jam-packed field to qualify for the fall race as Northville Township Supervisor Mark Abbo and attorney Marc Corriveau bested four Republicans and two Democrats, respectively.

Plymouth residents Beth Stewart, Jason Vorva, Don Schnettler, and Wayne resident T. Cortez Spann followed Abbo, who received 4,183 votes. Corriveau—with 2,222 votes— triumphed over Plymouth resident Joanne Lamar and Northville resident Joe Hawver.

“I’m pleased,” Abbo said. “I’m really pleased with the results.” Abbo took the top spot in all municipalities in the district, save the City of Plymouth.

For the past 30 years, Abbo, a certified public accountant, has managed budgets for both small and large companies. He currently serves as the vice president and treasurer of STM Power, a renewable energy company.

He said that would be a benefit should he win the seat in November, given that the bulk of the Michigan tax structure would have to rewritten or amended during the next two years.

“It’s something we absolutely need,” he said. “I want to be a part of that.”

He said he saw similar issues walking the diverse neighborhoods of Wayne, Plymouth and Northville and he felt his message resonated with the voters.

Corriveau, who sought this same post in 2004, said he managed his campaign differently the second time around.

“I hope the people give me a chance because I really believe I’m the best person to represent them. I look forward to running against (Abbo). Hopefully there’s no divisiveness in the general election.”

The general election takes place Nov. 7.
