Historian Mildred Hanchett and photographer Suzie Doolittle (above, left) dominate one section of the mural, while William Corlett occupies another.

The second phase of the Wayne History Mural is starting to take shape.

The Wayne City Council approved the overall concepts of the remaining four panels Monday night.

“It’s really the completion of the mural,” said Peter McInerney, community development director for the City of Wayne. “There is
no phase three of the Wayne History Mural.”

The four panels depict early life in the city. The first two, themed Rural Life and Schools, Education and Military, are closest to Wayne Road. The Rural Life panel depicts a group of boys eating maple syrup on snow along with Irving Carpenter, who is the large figure on the panel.

The Schools, Eduction and Military panel includes athlete Pat Sheridan and educator Bill Hawley.

On the far side, panels seven and eight depict the transition from village to city and the origin of the community. William Corlett, the first village president is depicted there, along with photographer Suzie Doolittle and Historian Mildred Hanchett.

“They show her sorting through pictures of churches and you can bet–the way David Fichter and Joshua Winer work–that they will be pictures of historical churches,” McInerney said.

The artists will be back in town in June for three weeks to finish the project.

“There’s always room to add more details,” McInerney said. “They have artistic license up until the end of it.”
