The Wayne-Westland Commun-ity Schools Board of Education officially has a new member and a new president.

William Gabriel was sworn in for his first four-year term Monday night and long-time board secretary Martha Pitsenbarger was voted in as board president.

“It’s an honor to be sitting here,” said Gabriel, moments after he was sworn in by Westland Mayor Bill Wild.

Pitsenbarger said her new role would be an adjustment; she served secretary for the past 12 years—and still attempted to call several votes Monday night.

“I’ll do my best to do a good job,” she said with a smile.

Skip Monit was chosen as vice-president; Cindy Schofield will take over secretary duties and Stephen Becher is the new board treasurer.

Fred Weaver said he intends to stay active on the board for as
long as possible—even though his house is on the market. He said that was a reflection of a work transfer that made for a nasty commute.

“It’s been pretty cost-prohibitive to travel,” he said.

He said he would continue to perform his duties until he had to move, however, and wanted to reassure the residents that he would be available.

“We fully expect it to be along process to sell it—if at all,” Weaver said.
