'One man crime spree' sentenced

A crime spree that took place in Wayne and Westland during the past several months is now officially over.

Sedrick Ford has been sentence to at least 12 years in prison for a string of robberies throughout the two cities—and beyond—that date back to 2007, according to Lt. Jason Wright of the Wayne Police Department.

“We caught up with him,” said Wright, “You can’t continue to do that and expect not to get caught.”

Ford was caught in Romulus and arraigned for crimes there. He admitted to five robberies in Wayne: a Nov. 7, 2007 robbery at Burger King, a Nov. 30, 2007 robbery at Burger King, a Dec. 7, 2007 robbery at the Little Caesar pizzeria at Annapolis and Howe roads, a March 2, 2008 robbery at Hungry Howies and an April 6, 2008 robbery at the CVS Drug Store on Van Born Road.

In each of those, Ford walked into the establishment during the day, lifted his shirt and showed a handgun tucked into his belt. He didn’t try to disguise his face in any way.

“This was the guy,” said Wright. “He knew details of the robberies.”

He also admitted to robbing the Quizno’s restaurant in Westland on January, 2007, a Subway there on March 3, 2008 and the KFC just north of Glenwood on March 8. He robbed a KFC in Dearborn, too.

He was sentenced last week through an agreement with the Wayne County Prosecutor. He faces 12-30 years in prison for the robbery charges as well as up to 10 years for use of a firearm during a felony.

“He’s doing time for all of them, in a nutshell,” said Wright.

Wright said that plenty of interaction between departments took place during the course of the investigation, starting with the initial head up from Romulus.

“There was a lot of good cooperation between all the departments on this,” he said. “All the contact the detectives had with each other really facilitated this. A lot of good police work went into this.

“We feel pretty good,” he added. “We know this guy will be off the streets for a minimum of 12 years. We were able to clear up all of our robbery cases and now we don’t have to wonder if this guy is still out there.”
