Hundreds of shoppers visited the first Farmer's Market day in Wayne last week. The event takes place from 3-7 p.m. every Wednesday in the parking lot of the State Wayne Theater on Michigan Avenue.“I couldn’t have asked for more,” said Sandy McClure.
The Farmer’s Market debuted last Wednesday in the City of Wayne and McClure, the market manager, said she was more than pleased with the success of the new venture. Vendors from throughout southeastern Michigan set up booths in the parking lot of the State Wayne Theater, and throngs of shoppers responded, picking up items as varied as hand-made jewelry, baked goods, wine and, of course, flowers and other plants.
“I think it worked out very well,” said McClure, a Ford Motor retiree.
The Farmer’s Market will continue through October at the theater. It will be open from 3-7 p.m. every Wednesday. It was discussed and promoted by the Wayne 20/20 Committee, who pushed through a budget for the market last year.
City Planner Matt Miller has been instrumental in developing the market and promoting it.
“I’m very pleased with the way it turned out,” he said.
The market was busy all day long and vendors compared their sales favorably with those at other, more established markets. The city earned some recognition, too; all three major network news channels visited the site and broadcast live from there.
“I think this is a good thing,” said Linda Story, a member of the 20/20 Committee. “It’s a good thing for the city.”
McClure said since the first two days have provided a good foundation for the event. She said she has different themes planned for upcoming market days to help ensure its continued success, such as a ‘beach party’ day in July.
“Now that we’ve got the first weeks under our belt, we’re going to concentrate on making each week special,” she said.
