New superintendent is familiar with area
The newest department superintendent in Westland is certainly no stranger to the area.
William “Benny” McCusker, formerly worked in Inkster and was most recently the facilities and operations director for the City of Novi. He also served as the public works director for both Novi and Wixom.
“Westland is fortunate to be able to hire someone with the depth of experience Benny (McCusker) brings to the position and I look forward to his contributions in managing one of the city’s largest departments during these challenging economic times,” said Mayor William R. Wild.
In his new position, McCusker will work under the direction of DPS Director Kevin Buford and will be responsible for department operations including managing the staff of about 50 employees and supervising delivery of services in the community.
“Hiring Benny also affords Kevin (Buford) the ability to concentrate in other areas of the department including financial oversight and leveraging regional partners for the betterment of city services,” Wild added.
Buford, as director, is also responsible for services provided to Westland by the City of Detroit and the Detroit Water & Sewerage Department, Republic Waste and the city Mission Green recycling program, federal and state programs including the revolving fund loans to finance capital improvements. Buford will also continue to represent the department interests with business owners,
residents, council members and other federal, state and county officials.
McCusker, who has nearly 40 years of experience in managing water and sewer systems, construction and maintenance, roads and fleet management, began work with the city July 1. He is a graduate of the University of Virginia and attended Lawrence Tech and Michigan State universities. He holds LEEDS certification and water, sewer and wastewater licenses.
McCusker replaces former DPS Superintendent Don Rohraff, who recently accepted a position with the City of Livonia.
