One of the highlights for the 10 teens selected to the homecoming court will be the crowning of the Homecoming King and Queen during the football game tonight.

Rocket pride will be all the rage tonight as the John Glenn High School welcomes back alumni and supporters during the annual Homecoming event.

The festivities began for the 2,150 students at John Glenn earlier this week as the school hosted special Spirit Days to encourage enthusiasm and will continue this afternoon as the school hosts the annual pep assembly.

So far, John Glenn High School Principal Joan Sedik said, everything is shaping up well for an enjoyable homecoming.

“The kids have been showing more involvement than they have in past years,” she said.

For everyone else, however, the fun will begin at 6 tonight with the annual homecoming parade. The parade will head west down on Marquette Road from the Stottlemyer Early Childhood Center, located on Marquette Road between Wayne and Wildwood roads, to the John Glenn High School football field.

Then, at 7 p.m., John Glenn will face Walled Lake Central during the homecoming football game. Admission to the game is $3 for students with current school ID and $4 for adults and students without ID.

The new homecoming king and queen will be selected at halftime. This year, John Glenn seniors Natalie Bower, Michelle Gutowski, Kija Colts, Kaiya Montague, and Lindsay Bies will vie for the title of Homecoming Queen while Shamir Garia, Matt Kukulka, Angelo Brown, Frank Toarmina, and Rob Jones will contend for Homecoming King.

In addition to the memories homecoming creates for the current students, it also marks the major return for John Glenn alumni, although Sedik said that it’s “hard to tell” how many of the visitors to the game are alumni and how many are there for other reasons. Even with large groups, including the Class of ’86 members expected to stop by tonight, she said, it’s always a surprise to see who will attend.

“Pretty much, they just show up,” she said.

According to John Glenn High School Assistant Principal and Homecoming coordinator Marva Foster, the homecoming event is scheduled for a Thursday rather than a Friday this year because Walled Lake Central requested Friday night off in order to celebrate Rosh Hashanah.
