Charity car show draws crowd

The weather didn’t cooperate when Don Nicholson brought his annual charity car show to the grounds of the Western Wayne Skill Center in Westland, but that didn’t matter.

The event, which benefits the center, was still well attended and successful, he said.

“Even though the weather was cloudy and rainy all around us we actually had a great night,” he said. “Our car count was not as high as I would have liked, but people don’t bring these kinds of cars out with as big a threat for rain as we had.”

The event took place on June 28.

In the end, about 45 cars showed up—everything from modern day muscle cars to classic cruisers and the No. 6 Mark Martin Ford Fusion, courtesy of AA Michigan and Rousch Racing—with owners from Brighton to Garden City, Northville to Romulus.

Dignitaries included State Rep. Glenn Anderson (D-Westland) and Westland City Councilman Richard LeBlanc as well as Al DiPaolo, director of the Western Wayne Skill Center.

The Western Wayne Skill Center is a School that teaches Living and life skills as well as job training to special needs young adults in Western Wayne. Including Wayne, Westland, Livonia, Inkster, Redford Canton and many other cities.

Nicholson puts on the charity show every year to generate funds for the facility. One of the awards, The Eddie’s Choice Award, is given out by his 22-year-old autistic son. Joseph Frank, of Dearborn won that this year for his 1995 Ford Mustang.

Other top awards include: the Best of Show, given to Bob Rays of Northville for his 1969 Pontiac Trans Am and Bill Krumbach of Wayne for his 1960 Ford Falcon. Mike and Carol Bader or Romulus earned the best restored-pre 1965 award for their 1964 Ford T-Bird Roadster Convertible.
