Antique appraisal clinic scheduled
It’s time to dust off the old family heirlooms and retrieve the half-forgotten boxes in the attic as the Fifth Annual Newburgh Road Show descends on Westland.
The show, which is patterned after the popular Antiques Road Show television series, will offer individuals of all ages the opportunity to learn more about their treasures from area experts on July 28.
“With seniors, many of them have items they’ve had for years, and years, and years,” said Peggy Ellenwood, director of Westland Senior Resources. “They have no idea what things are worth now, so they jumped right on it. Last year, 300 or more people attended. The room was packed instantly when we opened and it didn’t start thinning out until we closed at 3 p.m.”
The most common question, she said, is probably the value of the item. Because value is dependant on a lot of things, including location, Ellenwood said that appraisers are careful to take that into consideration.
Although value is a major consideration, Ellenwood said that appraisers are also able to help most participants gain some insight into the history of the item as well as on the proper way to care for it.
Specialists will be available to examine virtually anything, including glassware, china, furniture, paper items, autographs, sports memorabilia, quilts, toys, dolls, jewelry, weapons, and war memorabilia.
“There’s just such a variety of items that are brought in—you don’t see a lot of any one thing,” Ellenwood said. “Even if you don’t have any items, it’s fun just to stop by and see what others have and learn a little more about antiques.”
Organizers hope to make the event even more fun for everyone by streamlining the process, too.
“This year, we’ve limited it to three items per person,” she said.
The event will is open to individuals of all ages and from all communities, Ellenwood.
The show will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on July 28 at the Westland Friendship Center. Admission will be $1 per person and appraisals are $3 each. The Friendship Center is located at 1119 North Newburgh Road, just south of Ford Road in Westland.
