Board of education leaders chosen

On Monday, the Wayne-Westland Board of Education elected officers for the 2006-2007 school year.

In a vote of confidence from his peers, 2005-2006 board President Fred Weaver was returned to the post for a third time.

This year, he said, one of his priorities is availability.

“I want to make a more concerted effort to make sure we get into all of the schools,” he said.

He added that although several of the board members are already actively engaged in attending school functions and interacting with students, teachers, and parents, he wants to see the board reach even further. Outreach was also an issue in his previous terms, which helped lead to board functions such as Project 180 and Project 180 Too.

“The unity of the board is excellent,” he said. “We expect to go to the next level this year.”

Weaver, who recently completed his first four-year term on the board, was re-elected in May after an uncontested bid for the seat. In addition to expressing his appreciation for the chance to remain president of the board, he also said that he “would like to thank the community for showing confidence in me and voting for me for a second term.”

Terrance McClain was tapped to take on the duties of the vice president of the board. Last year, that position was filled by Cindy Schofield.

Like Weaver, board Secretary Martha Pitsenbarger was asked to retain the position she had filled during the 2005-2006 school year.
Steve Becher is now the honorary ‘money man’ for the board. He was selected to replace McClain as board treasurer.

Schofield has joined Skip Monit and Ed Turner as board trustee. She is filling as position formerly occupied by Becher.
