Scholarships awarded by group

Returning to college just got a little easier for Rola Francis of Westland.

The single mother of two just received a $1,000 scholarship from the Wayne Business and Professional Women (BPW), according to Donna McEachern, publicity chair for the organization.

The organization awards the scholarships every year to women who either live or work in the Wayne or Westland community, according to McEachern. Fifteen women applied this year.

“The applicants are mature women who, because of circumstances, are returning to school to obtain education that will lead to financial independence,” she said.

Francis is studying to be an office specialist at Schoolcraft College, she said. Her ultimate goal is to earn an associate’s degree in office administration.

The Wayne BPW also awards a scholarship to senior a senior from John Glenn, Wayne Memorial or a student at the Tinkham Center.

The money for the scholarships comes from fundraisers, the largest of which is the annual Wayne BPW fashion show, McEachern said.

This year, the Spring Fling will take place on Thursday May 17 at the Wayne Community Center on Howe and Annapolis roads. It begins with a dinner at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 per person or $20 for senior citizens and students. They are available from any Wayne BPW member or by calling (248) 305-8264.
