Suspect charged in Westland murder
A Westland man was arraigned on murder charges Wednesday after allegedly stabbing a Dearborn man following an argument.
Christopher Allunte Long, 18, was charged with first-degree murder Wednesday in front of Judge C. Charles Bokos at the 18th District Court in Westland. The charges stem from the death of 45-year-old Gerald William Dean, Jr. of Dearborn.
Residents of the Country Court Apartments in Westland discovered Dean’s body with a knife in the back of the head in the courtyard of the complex shortly before 1 p.m. on Sunday.
Sgt. Thad Nelson of the Westland Police Department said that the disagreement began over a cigarette. Police said Dean worked at the complex, located at 5995 North Wildwood, doing some drywall and restoration work in a vacant apartment. Long and his roommate allegedly asked Dean for a cigarette, but he didn’t have one. The defendant then allegedly went to borrow a cigarette from a neighbor and smoked it.
“Dean asked to hit the cigarette,” said Nelson.
His request wasn’t granted. Nelson said that Long told police that, as Dean turned away, he allegedly mumbled a racial slur under his breath.
Long returned to his apartment and grabbed a kitchen knife from the sink, Nelson said, and then confronted Dean about the alleged racial slur. Nelson said that Long claimed Dean took a swing at him. Long then pulled out the knife and stabbed Dean in the base of the neck with the knife, police said.
“He then went back to his apartment and began to play video games,” said Nelson.
Police found Dean unresponsive at the scene. Paramedics transported him to Garden City Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
During the arraignment, Bokos remanded Long to Wayne County jail without bond and entered a not-guilty plea on his behalf.
If convicted, a first-degree murder charge is punishable by life in prison without parole.
Representatives for the Country Court apartment complex did not return calls for comment.
