Decision 2006
LeBlanc edges Godbout in vote
The votes had not been finalized Tuesday night, but when The Eagle went to press, Richard LeBlanc appeared to have won an easy victory over Jim Godbout in the Aug. 8 primary election.
Leblanc held a 1,706 to 601 vote over Godbout in the race to succeed State Rep. Glenn Anderson (D-Westland) in the Michigan house with only a few precincts not reporting.
“I’m excited and thrilled,” LeBlanc said. “I feel very privileged.”
The numbers gave him roughly 65 percent of the vote.
Godbout said he was disappointed in the outcome, but not in the way he ran his election.
“We ran the campaign we wanted to run,” he said. “Everything we put out was positive. We tried to focus on what I accomplished on the city council.”
Both men currently serve on the Westland City Council. Godbout is the former council president pro-tem.
LeBlanc will face Republican Sam Durante in the general election in November. He said he will continue to campaign for the job.
LeBlanc had Anderson’s endorsement and help throughout the campaign and the United Auto Worker’s Union on his side.
“With a low voter turnout, it’s tough to overcome those obstacles,” Godbout said.
Wayne County Commissioner Kay Beard also easily won re-election over her challenger, Vernall Massey.
