Charges pending in domestic assault

A domestic disagreement that spiraled into assault last Thursday allegedly caused a six-months-pregnant woman to lose her baby.

According to Lt. Dan Karrick of the Westland Police Department, officers received a domestic complaint at 7 p.m. on Jan. 3 from an apartment in the vicinity of Warren Road and Central City Parkway.

He said that witnesses told police at the scene about a disagreement that had occurred between the 19-year-old expectant mother from Texas and her 24-year-old boyfriend, who is a Wayne resident. Neither individual resided in the apartment complex. Karrick indicated that he believed it was the home of a friend.

“She got into an argument with the boyfriend about getting an abortion,” said Karrick.

As the discussion became increasingly heated, Karrick said that the suspect grabbed the pregnant woman by the throat, threw her to the ground, and punched and kicked her repeatedly in the abdomen. She subsequently lost the baby, which was delivered dead on Saturday.

“She was released out of the hospital Saturday evening,” said Karrick.

The woman has since returned to Texas.

Her boyfriend turned himself in to Westland police over the weekend. As of Tuesday, his name had not been released pending arraignment. Police anticipated that charges would be filed by the end of the week. No information on what those charges might be was available as of Tuesday.
