Mayor plans State of the City update
As the end of the fiscal year looms in the City of Westland, residents will have a chance to learn more about plans for the upcoming year.
Westland Mayor Bill Wild will present the annual State of the City address at 6 p.m. on May 29 in the John Glenn High School auditorium. The event is designed to update community members on recent accomplishments in the city and to discuss the status and progress of upcoming projects.
“While Michigan’s economy has presented its share of challenges, I am pleased to relay that fiscally, Westland is sound and we will continue to provide quality services to our residents,” said Wild. “I am again looking forward to the opportunity to deliver this address to the residents and business owners of our ‘All American City’.”
According to Deputy Mayor Courtney Conover, there is no way to accurately predict how many people will choose to participate in the event but they are planning on several hundred.
“We’re looking forward to an all-encompassing crowd,” said Conover. “We really invite people to come out. This is for the residents.”
The State of the City program attracted about 350 people last year at the Friendship Center. The event was moved to the auditorium at John Glenn High School, she said, to make the event even more comfortable.
The program will focus on several topics, with the financial status of the city, including a discussion of the proposed 2008-2009 budget, expected to be one of the main issues.
The future of Central City Park, which has been closed indefinitely due to environmental concerns, is also expected to be a topic of discussion. Specifically, the address will focus on the status of remediation negotiations with Wayne County.
Finally, the discussion will address changes to the appearance and prosperity of the city with information on economic development efforts and on the upcoming Ford Road revitalization project.
Refreshments will be available at a reception in the school media center immediately following the presentation.
John Glenn High School is located at 36105 Marquette Road between Newburgh and Wayne roads in Westland.
The auditorium is limited to about 225 seats. Overflow seating will be available in the media center.
