Rotary uses yuks for bucks

Tonight, entertainment will mesh with philanthropy as the Westland Rotary hosts Comedy With a Cause, a fundraiser that features an evening filled with stand-up comedy.

Beginning at 8 p.m., Joey’s Comedy Club in Livonia is expected to fill with an enthusiastic crowd of Rotary supporters in search of a good time.

“This is the first time we’ve done this type of fundraiser,” said Mary Gregorsky, club secretary for Westland Rotary.

The event, which was developed by Rotary president Mark McConnell, developed out of a desire to find a fundraiser that could replace the annual Easter plant sale, Gregosky said.

The group is now stepping back to see how the community will respond. So far, she said that things seem to be going well.

“We’re pretty optimistic about it,” she said. “We don’t have that many tickets left, but there are still a limited number available.”

Anyone interested in participating should reserve tickets as soon as possible, Gregosky said. Tickets for the show are $15 per person and may be purchased at the Westland Chamber of Commerce.

Proceeds from the event will benefit various Westland Rotary charities.

“We try to do a lot for the local community, but we do some things at the national level as well,” she said.

Past philanthropic efforts in the Westland area have included numerous scholarships to Westland students, ongoing support for the Wayne-Westland Salvation Army Post, and individualized projects such as the installation of swings for wheelchair-bound students at various area elementary schools.

To purchase tickets, visit the Westland Chamber of Commerce at 36900 Ford Road. For more information, contact the chamber at (734) 326-7222 or Mary at C&M Printing at (734) 729-5401. Joey’s Comedy Club is located at 36701 Plymouth Road in Livonia, just east of Newburgh Road.
