Ontario woman killed in auto crash
An auto accident at the intersection of Hix and Ford roads early last Thursday proved fatal for a Windsor woman.
Police believe that the 19-year-old ran through a blinking red light at about 5:30 a.m. at the intersection of Hix and Ford roads.
According to Ofc. Patrick Corby of the Westland Police Department, problems developed when the woman attempted to turn her 1995 Chevrolet Beretta left onto eastbound Ford Road off of southbound Hix Road and inadvertently placed the vehicle into the path of a 2002 Chevrolet Blazer headed westbound on Ford Road.
Witness reports suggest that the woman had proceeded through the blinking red light without stopping and tried to brake too late, he said. Without enough time to react, the Blazer driven by a 36-year-old Westland man crashed into the Beretta.
“It appears he couldn’t have done anything to prevent it,” said Corby. “He was in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
The male driver was uninjured, but the female driver died soon afterwards at Annapolis Hospital in Wayne due to injuries she received in the accident.
The woman had just dropped her boyfriend off at work and was headed back to his apartment when the accident took place, according to witness testimony.
Crashes of this nature are relatively infrequent, Corby said, particularly in the Ford/Hix area.
“It’s not a problem intersection,” he said.
The accident may have stemmed, in part, from the scarcity of other drivers in the area. To prevent future tragedies, Corby suggested that drivers should continue to be diligent in honoring all of the traffic laws and to fight the urge to be lulled into a sense of false security when traffic is light.
“It will make it safer for everybody,” Corby said.
