City hosts annual fishing derby
Time’s running out for young anglers to show off their fishing skills this weekend during the 7th Annual Fishing Derby.
The event, sponsored by the Westland Parks and Recreation Department and the Westland Fire Department, is open to those between 3-14 years old. It will take place between 9-11 a.m. Saturday at Friendship Lake in Westland.
The pond, which is normally open for catch and release fishing during daylight hours, is fully stocked with a variety of fish. The competition site is located off of Central City Parkway just north of Marquette Road.
Participants should bring a fishing pole and bait with them on the day of the event. A limited number of fishing poles are available for reservation in advance. Interested children must pre-register; no walk-ins will be accepted. Registration is $7 per angler, which includes the event, prizes, breakfast, and lunch, and $3 per parent, which includes breakfast and lunch only.
To register, visit the Bailey Recreation Center in Westland at 36651 Ford Road. For more information, call (734) 722-7620.
