Off duty officer cracks assault case
It’s a good thing Ofc. Brian Humphrey is still on duty when he’s off the clock.
Humphrey, a Westland officer, was on his way home Wednesday when he spotted a vehicle that matched the one driven by the suspect in an assault that took place earlier this week.
“He turned around and saw that the suspect matched the description given by the victm,” said Lt. Dan Karrick of the Westland Police Department. “He called in some uniformed officers and we were able to make an arrest.”
Steven Wayne McIntyre, 29, of Westland was charged with four counts stemming from the assault that took place on Saturday. He faces felony charges of unlawful imprisonment, criminal sexual assault, second degree, assault with intent to commit sexual penetration and for impersonating a peace office to committee a crime. His bond was set at $500,000.
“We are happy to have this guy locked up,” Karrick said. “It was a very scary crime.”
The seeds for it were planted on July 3 when McIntyre met the 18-year-old victim and two male friends while driving near Grand Travers and Akron in Westland.
Posing as a photographer, he asked the woman if she would be interested in modeling, according to Karrick. They exchanged phone numbers and eventually set up a meeting at a Bob Evans restaurant in Romulus.
Once he presented paperwork and convinced the victim, a Wayne resident, that he was legitimate, her grandfather left the scene. McIntyre and the victim traveled to several locations where he took pictures of her and eventually ended up in Hines Park, where the alleged assault took place, Karrick said.
The suspect attempted to get the victim to disrobe and when she refused, he restrained her with zip ties and assaulted her, according to Karrick. Noise in the woods nearby caused him to let her go and flee the scene. Disoriented, the victim managed to walk through the woods and return to the lot where they had parked and get help.
“She was shaken up, but she only had minor injuries,” Karrick said.
Karrick credited Humphrey’s quick action in getting the suspect into custody so quickly.
“He did a real good job with this,” he said.
McIntyre has a minor criminal history, he added.
