Charges sought after police standoff

A Westland man arrested after he allegedly threatened a woman with a gun early Sunday morning may soon face charges in the incident.

The Westland Police Depart-ment was notified of a problem at the single-family home on Brandon Street, south of Palmer Road, the suspect occupied at about 3 a.m. Aug. 10.

“We received a call from a woman who said that she was assaulted by her roommate,” said Lt. Dan Karrick of the Westland Police Department.

The 28-year-old woman told police that her assailant was a 58-year-old Westland man with whom she lived as a caregiver. According to Karrick, the woman told police that she had been away from the home for part of the evening and, upon returning to the house, got into a disagreement with her roommate/client.

“He produced a pistol and pointed it at her abdomen,” said Karrick. “He told her she had better leave fast or something bad was going to happen.”

The woman, who was unharmed during the confrontation, fled the home and contacted the police department. Officers responded to the home but were unable to make contact with the man. Without any way of knowing what was going on in the home, Karrick said that the officers who responded to the call ended up calling in the department’s Tactical Response Unit—the equivalent of a SWAT team— around 4 a.m. to oversee the situation. The TRU was on-site beginning at around 5 a.m., but they, too, had difficulty in receiving a response from the suspect until about 8 a.m.

“We used a (public address) system to finally reach him,” said Karrick. He indicated that he was unsure whether or not the suspect had been aware of previous attempts to make contact.

The suspect, who ended the standoff by surrendering peacefully, has no prior criminal history. His name has not been released pending arraignment. Westland police expected Tuesday to receive word from the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office by the end of the week about what charge or charges the man will face.
The gun displayed in the alleged incident was a licensed firearm.
