Arraignment scheduled for Westland shooting suspects

Three suspects in a Westland shooting will be arraigned tomorrow.

The men were involved in a shootout with police Tuesday afternoon at the Merri-Warren shopping plaza. They were supposed to be the targets of an undercover drug bust set up by the Romulus police department, according to public safety officials there, but instead pulled weapons and tried to steal the three kilos of cocaine they had arranged to buy.

The suspects will be arraigned at 9 a.m. tomorrow at the 18th District Court in Westland. The Journal does not publish the names of suspects until they are arraigned.

The situation developed when an informant for the Romulus Police Department set up a meeting with prospective cocaine buyers in the parking lot outside Bob’s of Canton, located on the northeast corner of the intersection of Warren and Merriman roads in Westland. Westland Police Chief James Ridener said Tuesday that the ‘buyers’ had no intention of paying for the three kilograms of cocaine the informant had in his possession and instead brandished weapons.

Nine Romulus police officers—who had waited in two vans parked nearby—returned fire on the ‘buyers’. The incident left one of the suspects dead at the scene from a gunshot wound. A second suspect was wounded and police indicated he was in stable condition as of Thursday afternoon, and moved to an undisclosed hospital for treatment. No police officers or civilians were injured during the incident

“I am amazed there’s not more injuries,” said Ridener.

Romulus Director of Public Safety Charles Kirby later indicated the cocaine had a street value of about $75,000.
